History of the David Labkovski Project

2015
DLP Founded
Leora Raikin, DLP Executive Director

The David Labkovski Project is founded by Leora Raikin, niece of David Labkovski. Working with de Toledo High School students, the DLP installs its first exhibit at the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust

2016
  • Leora is the keynote speaker at the Rodgers Center Holocaust Commemoration Program at Chapman University 
  • The DLP launches its traveling exhibit “Documenting History Through Art,” along with docent tours and a book
  • The DLP creates and pilots a multidisciplinary inquiry-based curriculum at the Multicultural Learning Center
2017
  • The California Assembly recognizes the DLP for its Holocaust curriculum
  • The DLP installs exhibits and lectures in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, South Africa, as well as Santa Barbara and Long Beach, California
  • The DLP holds its first Scholars Event
2018
  • The DLP installs exhibits at West Point Military Academy, followed by exhibits and educational programs in New Jersey and Arizona
  • The DLP expands its educational programs to universities, including Loyola Marymount University
  • The DLP lectures and exhibits onboard the Uniworld Jewish Heritage Cruise on the Rhine River, Europe
2019
  • The DLP sponsors an exhibit co-curated by students of Viewpoint School, Calabasas and Lycium School, Vilnius
  • The DLP presents its program to LA City Council members and receives recognition for its Holocaust education programs
  • The California Jewish Legislative Caucus invites the DLP and student docents to observe Holocaust Memorial Day and local tours for CA State legislature
2020
  • The DLP pivots due to COVID-19, with an international virtual Holocaust commemoration ceremony and provides virtual exhibits and lectures presentations to Santa Monica Rotary Club and New CAJE conference
  • The DLP launches its dual Language Reflect and Respond Program at Collegio Lagunita de Mexico 
  • The DLP launches its virtual international student docent training program, grades 8-12
2021
  • The DLP launches its international virtual Young Leadership Fellows Program for young adults 18-24.
  • The DLP launches its international virtual Student Docent Training Program
2022
  • DLP is recognized by West Point Military Academy in the recently published book “Teaching the West Point Way, Educating the Next Generation of Leaders.” The authors convey how instrumental empathy is for leadership and that DLP’s pedagogy was specifically chosen as a way to teach officers and cadets how to express empathy. The authors recognized and praised the DLP educational program stating: “The beauty of this project is that it can be adapted to many different types of courses and levels.”
2023
  • DLP expands the Teacher Training Program. 
  • DLP opens an exhibit in Las Vegas, NV. 
2024
  • Over 200 students completed DLP's Student Docent & Leadership Training Program.
  • "Documenting History Through Art" exhibit opens at the Gotthelf Art Gallery at  Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in San Diego. Rebecca Leeman is interviewed by CBS for her role in bringing the gallery to life.
  • Eva Perlman, Holocaust Survivor, speaks with students at Valley Academy of Arts & Sciences as part of DLP's semester long in-class program.
2025
  • Multicultural Learning Center hosts a student curated exhibit.
