Children in the Vilna Ghetto

To Consider:
The plight of children in the Vilna Ghetto was a repeated subject that Labkovski depicts in his work of the Holocaust.  Looking at these two pieces, what do you notice?  How are the children dressed? Where are the adults?  In the piece on the left, what is the condition of the door in front of the children? What does that tell you?
Background:
Because of the mass murder of Jewish men and women, many children in the Vilna Ghetto were orphaned.  The Ghetto's Jewish Council, "Judenrat", worked to care for children by creating orphanages, schools and other needed services.

More about children in the Ghetto can be found in Yad Vashem's online exhibit, The Jerusalem of Lithuania: The Story of the Jewish Community of Vilna.
